    Staff augmentation

What are IT staff augmentation services?

IT staff augmentation services add external engineers to your own team, working under your management, process and tools. With Agnotic Technologies, augmented engineers join your stand-ups, sprints, repositories and code review, report to your engineering lead and follow your access and security policies for as long as you need the capacity.

You keep technical leadership and decide what each engineer works on. Agnotic handles vetting, contracts, equipment and a replacement if someone leaves.

It works best when your team already has a clear process and a lead with time to onboard people.

    Decision table

Staff augmentation or a dedicated team?

Both add Agnotic engineers. The question is who manages the work.

QuestionChoose staff augmentation ifChoose a dedicated team if
Do you have an engineering lead with time?Yes, and they will direct the new engineersNo, or they are already stretched
Is your delivery process working?Yes; you need more people in itNo; you want a team that brings its own
What is missing?Capacity, or one skill such as mobile, data or DevOpsA whole team to own a product or product area
Who should carry delivery risk? You, through your own planningAgnotic, through a lead engineer and sprint commitments
How long is the need?A known period, or until your own hires arriveMany releases with an evolving roadmap

If you are not sure, start with augmentation for a known gap. A group of augmented engineers can become a dedicated team later.

    Security and access

How are security and access handled?

Augmented engineers work inside your environment, so your controls apply. These are the practices we follow with every client.

    • Accounts created by you in your identity provider, or as guest users, never shared logins
    • Multi-factor authentication on every account, including repositories and cloud consoles
    • Least-privilege repository roles and cloud permissions, widened only when the work needs it
    • Laptops with disk encryption and screen lock, or devices managed by you if your policy requires them
    • No production or personal data on laptops unless your policy allows it
    • Confidentiality terms signed before access, plus a business associate agreement where health data is involved
    • Offboarding on the last day: access removed, credentials rotated and a written handover

    Roles

Which roles can we add to your team?

Individual engineers or a small group, matched to the gap in your team.

    Frontend and full-stack engineers

React, Next.js and TypeScript engineers who work in your component library and design system.

    Backend engineers

Node.js, Python or .NET engineers for APIs, data models, background jobs and integrations.

    Mobile engineers

Swift, Kotlin, React Native or Flutter engineers for iOS and Android apps.

    QA and test automation

Engineers who build automated test suites and own release checks inside your pipeline.

    DevOps and cloud engineers

Pipelines, infrastructure as code and monitoring on AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud.

    Data and AI engineers

Data pipelines, reporting and AI features, with evaluation and human review built in.

    Vetting and onboarding

How are engineers vetted and onboarded?

Five steps before an engineer writes code in your repository.

    1.

    Role brief

We write down the skills, seniority, time zone overlap and tools with your engineering lead.

    Brief
    2.

    Internal vetting

Candidates are assessed by Agnotic engineers on code, design and communication before you see them.

    3.

    Your interview

You interview the shortlisted engineers and decide who joins. No one is placed without your approval.

    Interview
    4.

    Access and tools

Your team grants accounts in your identity provider, repositories, tracker and chat, with the least access needed.

    Access
    5.

    First tasks and check-in

The engineer starts on a small, real task with a buddy from your team, and we review fit with you after the first sprints.

    Start

    When it does not fit

When does staff augmentation go wrong?

Honest failure points. Some have a fix; some mean another model is the better choice.

    Challenge

Nobody on your team has time to onboard or direct the new engineers.

    Agnotic approach

We name a buddy on your side before day one. If no one can take it, a dedicated team with its own lead is the better model.

    Challenge

Augmented engineers get only the work nobody else wants.

    Agnotic approach

We agree the kind of work in the role brief, and review it with your lead after the first sprints.

    Challenge

Access is granted through shared accounts and never removed.

    Agnotic approach

Named accounts in your identity provider only, and an offboarding checklist on the last day.

    Challenge

Knowledge stays in one contractor's head.

    Agnotic approach

Augmented engineers follow your documentation and review rules, and roll off with a written handover.

    Challenge

Time zones turn every question into a day's delay.

    Agnotic approach

Overlap hours are part of the role brief, and decisions are written in your tracker, not only said on calls.

    Checklist

What to prepare before the first engineer joins

A short list for your engineering lead. It decides how quickly a new engineer becomes useful.

    A written role brief

Skills, seniority, the first piece of work and who the engineer reports to.

    Accounts ready on day one

Identity provider, repositories, tracker, chat and any VPN, created per person.

    A local setup guide

How to run the product locally, with test data that is safe to use.

    A named buddy

Someone on your team who answers questions and reviews the first pull requests.

    Your working agreements

Branching, code review, definition of done and meeting times, in writing.

    An offboarding plan

Who removes access and receives the handover when the engagement ends.

    Frequently Asked Questions

With staff augmentation, you manage the engineers and the work runs in your process. With outsourcing, such as a dedicated team or a fixed-scope project, the vendor manages the engineers and owns delivery against an agreed goal.
