What pharmacy management software has to handle
A pharmacy runs on three tightly coupled loops: intake, dispensing, and inventory. Prescriptions arrive electronically over NCPDP SCRIPT and must be matched to a patient, checked for interactions and duplicate therapy (DUR), and queued for fill. Dispensing then decrements stock, tracks lot and expiry, and — for Schedule II–V drugs — writes to a controlled-substance register that has to reconcile perfectly. Generic inventory tools break the moment any of these loops touch real pharmacy rules.
Claims add a fourth loop. Real-time claim adjudication against the payer using the NCPDP Telecommunication standard determines what the patient pays before the drug leaves the counter, and rejections need a clear resolution path.
